A good animal pic captures the animal as they naturally are. You want something of the animal's personality to come through. If they are a playful, excitable dog, that’s what you want to see in the photos. If they’re a passive, cool feline who rules the living room like their own personal fiefdom, then that’s what you need to shoot.
Good animal photos benefit from being real. Fabricated, pro sessions can work, but I think they usually end up looking pretty unusual. What hamster runs around in a perfect clean place? My two would be more presumable to have tracked muddy paw traces all over the carpet. If you’ve got a dog or a horse or alternative outdoorsy pet, photograph it outside. If you’ve an indoor feline, rabbit, budgie or anything else, photograph it in its cherished napping place.
